The Musculoskeletal (MSK) System is made up of bones, joints and muscles. There are 206 bones that comprise the skeletal system. These are composed of osseous tissue, which is made up of proteins, minerals and bone cells. The joints protect the bones with a layer of cartilage and ligaments, which are in place to absorb a portion of the shock or weight involved with movement and join bones together and make the joint more stable. Muscles are used to help move the skeletal system.

A radiologist who specialized in this portion of the body has further medical training on how to examine and diagnose injuries and issues of the bones, joints and muscles more efficiently. In Upstate Carolina Radiology, we have two board certified Musculoskeletal Radiologist, Dr. Jason Kelly and Dr. Robert Helmer.
